The Cuban Society for International Law invites you to the "International Conference of the Challenges of the XXI Century and the role of International Law", to be held at Havana’s International Press Center on November 14, 15 and 16, 2002.

This Conference aims at promoting debates, exchange of experiences and the necessary reflections on International Contemporary Law, its principles, the concepts of humanitarian intervention, the limited sovereignty doctrine, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, the integration processes and the need to democratize the United Nations, among other topical issues.

Round-table discussions, panels and workshops will be organized to deal with those topics that the Organizing Committee deems convenient taking into account the number and quality of the papers presented. To this end, an invitation is herein issued to all internationalists, jurists, foreign affairs experts, attorneys, university professors and other professionals and university students interested in the relevant topics.

 

GENERAL TOPICS

 

1. International Contemporary Law. The new world order and the neoliberal globalization.

2. Humanitarian intervention, "limited sovereignty" and the extraterritoriality doctrine of the national jurisdiction.

3. Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law: conception and violations.

4. The Latin American – Caribbean Integration and its antithesis: the Americas Free Trade Association (AFTA).

5. Terrorism, war and International Law.

6. The indispensable democratization of the United Nations System.

7. The global problems of the XX Century and the unpredictable challenges of the new century.

The above topics do not preclude the possibility of adding others that may be addressed in the papers presented.

PRESENTATION OF WORKS:

Papers having a maximum of 25 pages may be presented in individual or collective form and they shall cover the result of theoretical studies, research works or professional practice. The papers shall be sent to the Organizing Committee in both a hard copy and magnetic support, written in Word text processor format and accompanied by a one-page abstract with the name of the topic, title of the work, name of author(s) and country, preferably by e-mail to jdn@ceniai.inf.cu before October 15, 2002.

The Organizing Committee shall select the works to be discussed in the Meeting and schedule their presentation, which includes Special Conferences delivered by outstanding national and international experts, and decide on the number of commissions to conduct sessions in line with the papers submitted.

The organizers are herein requesting the speakers to study the possibility of permitting the publication of a number of works presented and therefore shall appreciate the voluntary conveyance of the rights to publish papers and speeches. Should this request be accepted, it shall be so mentioned in the Memoirs.

REQUESTS FOR REGISTRATION:

Any requests for registration shall be requested to the Organizing Committed by fax, e-mail, telephone or other ways before October 15, 2002.

The registration fee shall be 180.00 USD for delegates and 90.00 USD for accompanying persons and undergraduate students (prior presentation of accrediting certificate), to be paid directly in the venue of the meeting during the accreditation process.

Fees include: Name badge, welcome cocktail, participation in all scheduled scientific activities, attendance certificate and farewell activity.

In order to facilitate attendance, several tourist packages have been designed and made available in national agencies where trips to Cuba are offered. CUBATUR shall be the welcoming agency.

Accommodation in the following hotels shall be arranged:

Includes: Lodging with breakfast for 4 nights, airport-hotel-airport transfer, visit to the Morro-Cabaņa Fortress and the 9:00 p.m. Cannon Shot Ceremony, farewell activity, tour guide services and personalized attention.

The above prices shall carry a 20% commission for agencies dealing with the meeting in foreign countries.

The Organizing Committee shall be very grateful to any institution, agency, media organ or persons who make information on this Meeting known to lawyers colleges, chancelleries, legal entities, specialized offices, universities and other entities related to the topics convened.
