Chilean Youth Demand the Release of the Cuban Five

HAVANA, Cuba, May 8 (acn) Representatives of communist youth groups and students denounced on Tuesday in Santiago de Chile the unjust and prolonged detention of the five Cuban anti terrorist fighters unjustly incarcerated in the US.

The denunciation was made during an activity held at the University of
Santiago de Chile where the speakers condemned the current situation of
Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, René González, Antonio Guerrero and
Fernando González, according to a report by Prensa Latina News Agency.

The Cuban Five were arrested in 1998, accused and arbitrarily sentenced to
long prison terms during a biased trial in Miami in flagrant violation of
US and international law.

Karol Cariola, General Screatary of Jota, which is the Chilean youth
political organization, expressed that those that had the luck of learning
about the current project underway in Cuba must defend it with the truth
referring to her recent trip to the Caribbean island heading a delegation
of young Chileans.

Demand solidarity with the Cuban Five, four of them in US prisons, and
Rene currently under supervised release after serving his sentence is also
a commitment for the Chilean youth and all that see Cuba as a reference
point for humanity and social justice, said Cariola.

Ileana Diaz Arguelles, Cuban ambassador to Chile thanked the young Chilean
communists and recognized in particular their commitment with the
representatives of the International Committee for the Release of the
Cuban Five in the US.

The participants to the activity were able to enjoy the documentary
Esencias, which tells of the recent and successful tour of the Cuban
children’s theater company La Colmenita to several US cities.
