Solidarity with the Cuban Five Increases in Europe

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 6 (acn) The Annual Conference of the British Labor Party, held in Brighton with the participation of some 150 delegates, included a rally in solidarity with the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

The event was presided over by Tony Lloyd MP, chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Party, and was organized by the UNITE trade union and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom.

Present in the meeting were Olga Salanueva and Irma Gonzalez, wife and daughter of Rene Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban antiterrorists, who thanked participants for the invitation and for their solidarity with Rene, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino – internationally known as the Cuban Five.

Among those who spoke at the rally were Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the British Trades Union Congress (TUC); Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson, joint general secretaries of UNITE, which is Britain’s biggest union; and Paul Kenny, General Secretary of the GMB trade union.

Meanwhile, in Stockholm, Sweden, the Communist League held a conference on the Cuban Five and US terrorism against Cuba as part of a series of activities held in the context of the 4th World Campaign in Solidarity with the Cuban antiterrorists.

The members of the Communist League and their youth organization were accompanied by members of the Stockholm Committee for the Release of the Cuban Five and representatives from other organizations in solidarity with Cuba.

In the meantime, Dr. Aleida Guevara, daughter of guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara, was the special guest of a conference held in the German city of Düsseldorf. The event was organized by the ‘Solicuba’ solidarity group and it was attended by some 250 people.

Aleida Guevara expressed her gratitude for the commitment of the movement in solidarity with Cuba in Germany and their support of the Cuban Five’s cause.
